This morning we celebrated our very first Published Writing Party! We have had a month of writers workshop and 3/4 West completed their first published piece. The pieces are all about their Hello, Goodbye Windows in their homes. We all have that one window that gets more attention than the others. We might check to see that the mail man came, or watch our students playing out front, or feel the excitement as we wait for the UPS driver to deliver a special package. What a great way to highlight each student and the great jobs they have done, than with Top Pot donuts and 15 seconds of fame. Thank you writers for sharing today!!! We even had the Principal for a day come in and listen to our stories, very exciting:)

Studies Weekly Quiz on Friday 9/30/11
There will be a Social Studies Quiz on Friday over what we have been learning in our Social Studies Weekly Newspapers. This year in SS we will study Maps/globes/atlases, and learn about communities in Washington and the US along with various communities in other parts of the world and how they are similar or different from ours.
What to Expect to know for the quiz: ( we will also go over this in class)
*List several things community members share.
* What does a compass rose show?
*Name the seven continents
*What are the cardinal directions?
*What are the intermediate directions?
*What is the line that divides the Western Hemisphere from the Eastern Hemisphere?
*What is the name of the line that divides the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere?
*What hemisphere do you live in?
*What are the names of the vertical lines that run across the globe East and West.
*What are the horizontal lines that run across the glob going North and South.

BON DIA WEEK 4!
September 26, 2011
Bon Dia, Good Day!
It was wonderful to see all of you at Curriculum Night last week! Thank you again for sharing your wonderful students with me this year. The #1 teacher in a student’s life is their parents. I look forward to being your partner this year as we work together to support your student

* Each week we will have a new ROCK STAR! Our first Rock Star this week is Catherine! Catherine will be featured all week. She is also able to bring in things to share with the other students. Each student will have the opportunity to be the Angelville Community Rock Star!
*Each week a Homework packet will go home on Monday to be returned on Friday. This week they will have a reading log to keep track of as well as a TFK (Time for Kids Magazine). There is a worksheet attached to the magazine. They will also need to complete the questions that are also in the magazine.
READERS/WRITERS WORKSHOP – EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT!!! Last week in Writers Workshop we were working on mini stories. The students finished their Front Page News Papers! They are on display for you all to enjoy outside of the classroom on the wall. We continue to work on Personal mini stories. This week we will talk about writing little ‘seed’ stories, not big ‘watermelon’ stories. We will also finish up our ‘Hello Good-bye Window’ stories. I hope to create a window outside the classroom to put these stories up for all to enjoy.
In Readers Workshop this week we will concentrate on the world in which we are transported to when we read our books. We will also be looking at the Mental Movie that is playing in our heads as we read our books. I will spend time going around and conferencing with all of the students about their books.
MATH – In 4th grade math this week we will continue to work on rounding and place value, multi-step word problems, money, time and multiplying factors.
RELIGION – This week we will start our Steps to Respect, anti-bullying program. Last week we talked about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives in each and every one of us. The Holy Spirit guides us in making the right choices and decisions. I had asked the students to bring in the names of their family members including their grandparents and great-grandparents. I told them that they may need some help from home with all of the names and on which side of the family they are on. We will be talking about out own family Trees.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!

*No school on Friday, Teacher Development Day.
*Each week a Homework packet will go home on Monday to be returned on Friday. This week they will have a comprehension story with questions and a reading log to keep track of their reading. Ideally each student is reading each night. The logs are part of our reader’s workshop and very important to log everything so that we are able to study them in order to become better readers.
*Friday Folders will come home each Friday with their weeks work. This is a great time to sit down with your student and go over what they have done that week. This gives you quality time with your student and also gives you an idea where your student is strong and where your student may need some extra support. I ask that you sign the outside of the folder, take out all of the papers, and return with your student the following Monday. This is part of their grade.
READERS/WRITERS WORKSHOP – Last week we started our new readers and writers workshop curriculum. This year the students will be working on many new reading and writing strategies. The idea behind these two curriculum's is to engage the students to live ("readerly" and "writerly") lives. So far it has been fantastic! I will explain more about these two at curriculum night on the 21st at 7pm.
MATH – This year the 3rd and 4th graders are split up for math. In 4th grade math this week we are working on rounding and place value. Your student will be given math assignments each day for the most part. They will be given time to begin this work. If they finish in class, super! If not they will be bringing it home to complete at home. This is different than the homework packet. Math is every day.

What does a Scientist look like? We had a great day in the garden last Friday. We will continue to work in the garden throughout the year.
RELIGION - This week we have been talking about our Angelville Community rules. We will also begin the Steps to Respect program.
Hope you all have a wonderful week!!! Contact me with any questions.
